Following up on Explain Everything
Often educators are bewildered by the 1,000,000+ applications on the app store, or even 'just' the iPad specific applications at 40,000+ and rising.
In fact, very few iPad applications are needed to make significant impact in any classroom. This post focuses on Explain Everything. If I had just one iPad in my classroom, this would be the application on that iPad.
Explain Everything is a powerful annotation tool that can be used as a white board (interactive white board) application.
- Imports PDFs, Keynote and Powerpoint files, alllowing you to 're-purpose' existing files you may alrady be using in your teaching
- An excellent range of annotation tools
- Records your voice and all annotations in real-time, allowing you to export the recording as a movie file directly to the camera roll. From their you can edit the movie in iMovie (adding titles, stills, more sound, more video footage etc), or bring it straight into an app like Book Creator, embedding your movie into an ePub
Combining Explain Everything with wireless mirroring in your classroom is a must. Instead of connecting via the VGA lead and being tethered to one spot, investigate going wireless.
Two options here, with Apple TV or Reflector. This essentially means that either an Apple TV (ATV) or your computer (Mac or PC) is connected to the projector, the latter is probably already the case in terms of your existing classroom setup. Your iPad connects wirelessly, (just like connecting wirelessly to your home network), to the ATV via airplay and you are then free to use your iPad from anywhere in the room.
With just one iPad as a resource in your classroom you can then use this with any child, much like an incredibly mobile IWB. There isn't a subject that could not be greatly enhanced with this set up, but obviously maths, sciences, diagrams, etc are immediate areas that would benefit here.
The following documents detail setting up wireless mirroring using ATV and Reflector.
These are for iOS6 but will be updated at some point.
